The Woman in the Morning Light

Black and white photograph of a person crossing a sunlit street in Baixa, Lisbon

**Baixa, Lisbon ยท March 2026**

Some moments announce themselves.

This one did not.

It was a Sunday morning. Baixa was almost empty.

The city had not yet woken up. The pavement was still cold. The trams had just started running.

Then I saw the light.

A narrow beam had escaped between two buildings on the opposite side of the street. It landed on a single section of wall, no wider than three or four metres. The rest of the street was in shadow.

I stopped.

I stood at the corner for almost ten minutes.

Then, without warning, a woman appeared from the right. She was walking calmly, without noticing me, without noticing the light, without noticing that she was about to walk into a photograph.

She stepped into the beam.

For a fraction of a second, her silhouette became the only thing in the frame that was truly alive.

I pressed the shutter once.

Then she stepped out of the light and continued walking, as if nothing had happened.
